How to choose your first airsoft gun: a practical guide
Before looking at brands and models, decide three things: the role you want to play, the power system you need and how much weight you're willing to carry. Then there's one check you should always make: the power limit (1 joule in Italy).

1. Start from your role, not the model
- Rifleman: rifle or carbine, the most versatile first choice. The database lists 1374 rifles.
- CQB (indoor): short carbine or SMG, light and handy.
- Sniper or DMR: bolt-action spring rifle or DMR. Needs patience and tuning: usually not the best first gun.
- Sidearm: a pistol, for when the rifle is empty or space is tight.
2. Pick a power system: almost always an AEG to start
AEGs (electric) are the usual first choice: they work in cold weather, are cheap to run (BBs and battery charging) and parts and technicians are easy to find. Gas guns are more realistic but suffer in the cold and use gas; spring guns must be cocked for every shot. See the power systems guide.
| Type | Replicas | Median weight | Median FPS | Under 1 J* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AEG (electric) | 1192 | 2,900 g | 380 | 20% |
| GBB (gas blowback) | 875 | 1,100 g | 330 | 47% |
| Gas NBB (non-blowback) | 309 | 940 g | 300 | 73% |
| CO2 | 330 | 1,085 g | 350 | 29% |
| Spring | 163 | 2,700 g | 365 | 45% |
| HPA (compressed air) | 26 | 1,960 g | 360 | 24% |
* Share of replicas with known joules (declared or computed from FPS). Many guns sold abroad exceed 1 J: in Italy you need tuned or downgraded versions.
3. Weight matters more than you think
A game lasts hours and you hold the gun most of the time. The median AEG in the database weighs about 2,900 g, ranging from carbines under 2 kg to metal rifles over 4 kg. For beginners and younger players a light gun is less tiring.

4. Always check the power limit
In Italy an airsoft gun must not exceed 1 joule. Italian versions ship already tuned; for others check the spec sheet and chrono the gun with the BBs you'll use. Details in the 1 joule limit guide.
In the database 826 of 2198 replicas with power data are within 1 J.

5. What you need besides the gun
- Eye protection: mandatory at every field. Many fields also require face protection for minors.
- Good BBs: cheap ones ruin accuracy and the hop-up. See the BB guide.
- Battery and charger for AEGs: often not included. See the battery guide.
- Spare magazines, ideally mid-caps (no winding, quieter).
If you can, try a few guns at a field or ask a local team before buying: it's the safest way to find what feels right.

FAQ
What is the best airsoft gun to start with?
For most players an AEG (electric) rifle or carbine: it works in cold weather, is cheap to run and parts and service are easy to find.
Metal or polymer?
Metal feels sturdier and more realistic but is heavier; good polymers are light and tough. The quality of the gearbox and hop-up matters more than the outer material.
Do I need a specific version for my country?
Check your local power limits. In Italy the limit is 1 joule: Italian versions ship already tuned, others must be chronographed and, if needed, downgraded by a technician.
What else do I need?
Eye protection (mandatory at every field), good BBs, spare magazines and, for AEGs, a suitable battery and charger.
